The Monastery of the Missionary Order of the Divine Word Fathers by the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Nysa was established at the end of the 19th century. The monastery complex included, among others, the monastery building – called the House of the Holy Cross, a chapel, a missionary school, as well as utility buildings serving as a brickyard and bakery, and recreational facilities: a gym and a swimming pool.
The three-story House of the Holy Cross, dominated by a slender tower, was 45 meters long. During World War I, the House of the Holy Cross served as a hospital, and after its end, a center educating future missionaries. The first appointed rector of the House was Joseph Weber, followed by Wilhelm Schmidt – a world-famous ethnologist, founder of the Anthropos Institute.
Currently, the greater part of the House of the Holy Cross is occupied by an agricultural school and a dormitory. Next to the house is the monastery cemetery – on its entrance gate, one can see a scene from Golgotha and a cross with figures of Mary and St. John the Apostle. From the inside, on the wall, there are plaques with the Stations of the Cross.
Near the monastery, there is a restored walking park with canals, bridges, islets, and chapels. A playground awaits families with children; there is also a shelter for lighting a bonfire.
