The "Defend Our Opole Region" monument, standing on Freedom Square in Opole, depicts a mustachioed uhlan saluting under a cannon, in which instead of a barrel there is a representation of the Piast Tower. It is a souvenir of the largest social uprising in the post-war history of the region, the aim of which was to keep the Opole Voivodeship on the administrative map of Poland, after the reforms in 1998. As part of the fight to maintain the voivodeship, Opole residents organized balls to which participants came dressed in yellow-blue colors associated with the region, as well as marches and blockades. Singers, writers, and local politicians joined the action. The sculpture was created as a result of inspiration by a drawing by draftsman and set designer Andrzej Czyczyła. During the battle for the voivodeship, it grew to the rank of a symbol: it appeared on stickers and banners, and documents sent to central authorities were also marked with it.
