The Beautiful Well in Nysa is one of the oldest municipal wells in Poland. It is a unique object on a national scale, considered a masterpiece of Baroque blacksmith art and constitutes one of the most valuable monuments of Nysa.
The well was made at the end of the 17th century at the commission of Mayor Caspar Naas by the overseer of the arsenal and Nysa mint, Wilhelm Helleweg. The stone casing, made of "Silesian marble" from Sławniowice, is covered with an intricate housing of iron bars with a total weight of 1600 kg. The decoration of the grate consists of plant, animal, and fantasy motifs, mainly images of figures and sea creatures. The grate is crowned with fleurons with a gilded, double-headed eagle of the Austrian Habsburgs. Inside, a water pump is visible, one of the first devices of this type in Silesia.
Residents of Nysa drank water from the Beautiful Well until 1880, until the launch of municipal waterworks. According to tradition, visitors to the city who throw a symbolic penny into the well will certainly return to this place.
