The historic Sparrow Tower in Otmuchów is the remains of the system of towers and defensive walls that surrounded the city in the Middle Ages. The facility was built in the second half of the 14th century, probably on the site of earlier wooden fortifications. In the 16th century, the Gothic tower was rebuilt, giving it a Renaissance character. In the lower part, it is built of stone and in the upper of brick, and the whole is currently covered with plaster.
The tower, often called Nysa Tower, has 10 keyhole embrasures and 4 slit ones, as well as 3 windows on the south side. The entrance to the tower was located above the gate portal from the city side, at a considerable height. In the ground floor, a barrel-vaulted room was placed, which could have served as a city detention center.
Most likely, the image of the Sparrow Tower is depicted in the municipal coat of arms of Otmuchów.
Practical information:
The legend of the first prisoner of the Tower from the vicinity of Głogówek, named Brygida, tells of
a woman who was imprisoned for killing a child born as a result of an illegitimate pregnancy. The woman's property was confiscated and used for the construction of the tower to which the murderess was sent.
