In the Museum of the Silesian Piasts in Brzeg, one can see rich collections of monuments related to the history of the city and the Brzeg land, the Silesian Piasts, and the Piast tradition. The institution possesses rich collections of medieval art (sculpture and altar painting), Silesian painting, graphics, weapons, objects from local manufactories, Silesian coins and medals, as well as documents and old prints, including part of the famous book collection of the Brzeg Piasts with their autographs. True uniques are the chronicle of the Brzeg Fowler Brotherhood from the years 1623-1848, containing colorful portraits of Fowler Kings, including the Dukes of Brzeg-Legnica, and a collection of 14 tin sarcophagi of the Brzeg-Legnica Piasts from the 16th-17th centuries. The collections are complemented by a collection of gingerbread molds, richly decorated guild chests, and clocks. The exhibition of paintings by Michael Leopold Willmann, described as the "Silesian Rembrandt," deserves special attention in the museum. The museum is located in the edifice of the Castle of the Silesian Piasts in Brzeg – called the "Silesian Wawel" – whose beginnings reach back to medieval times. The castle became the residence of the Duchy of Brzeg from its creation in 1311 until the extinction of this Piast line in 1675. Until the 17th century, this building had a typically defensive character. With the assumption of power by Duke George II, the castle gained the Renaissance form of a residence. In its underground lies the necropolis of the Silesian Piasts, and the whole is surrounded by reconstructed Renaissance Italian gardens. A distinguishing element of the building is the courtyard surrounded by cloisters. Practical information: Allow 1.5 – 2 hours for sightseeing. Museum open: Tue. – Sun., from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). Admission tickets: regular – 18 PLN, discounted – 12 PLN/ Ticket in the Large Family Card, Opole Family and Senior Card program – 12 PLN (visiting all exhibitions).
