The Diocesan Museum in Opolewas established in 1987 on the initiative of Bishop Alfons Nossol. In two halls, the most interesting works of sacred art from the entire Opole region in terms of artistic and historical value are exhibited, as well as European painting with religious themes. Among the most valuable monuments from the collections are Gothic figures: Madonna with Child from the Prague Parler school and Pieta from the workshop of master Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz), as well as a Renaissance painting in a tondo Madonna with Child and St. John the Baptist and Adoration of the Child from the school of Fra Angelico. The exhibited liturgical vessels were made in Silesian goldsmith workshops – among them, Baroque chalices, monstrances, and reliquaries from the manufactories of Nysa goldsmiths deserve special attention. The museum also houses a gallery of contemporary sacred art, in which exhibitions of painting, sculpture, drawing, graphics, and photography by contemporary artists from Poland and abroad are organized.
