The Sanctuary on St. Anne's Mountainis a popular pilgrimage site in the Opole region. It is famous for the cult of Saint Anne Samotrzecia (Saint Anne with Virgin and Child), whose Gothic figurine and relics are stored in the basilica. The 66 cm high figurine of the saint, holding her daughter Mary in her left hand and her grandson – Jesus Christ – in her right, belongs to the oldest wooden sculptures in Silesia.
The Neo-Baroque temple, which was originally built in the Gothic style in the 15th century, stands on a high hill – the highest point of the Silesian Upland, which means that a vast panorama of the area extends from below the object. The mountain is dotted with chapels forming the Stations of the Cross.
Inside, the Chapel of St. Anne from the beginning of the 19th century deserves special attention.
In 1983, Pope John Paul II made a pilgrimage to the sanctuary. In memory of this event, one of the gates bears the name of the Papal Gate.
Practical information:
One of the legends says that a Spanish duke was returning from a military expedition via the hill, carrying a statuette of St. Anne among the spoils of war. When the oxen reached the top of the hill, they stood still and did not want to move any further. The duke considered this a sign from heaven and erected a church on the top of the mountain, in which he placed the figurine of St. Anne.
The hill is open 24 hours a day.
The sanctuary is open from morning to evening.
