The Upper Castle in Opoleis one of the two castles that once existed in Opole, a former seat of the Opole Piasts. The structure was created in the second half of the 14th century, on the initiative of Duke Władysław II Opolczyk. The Upper Castle was located within the defensive walls of medieval Opole and was situated near the Gosławicka Gate. It owes its name to its location on the highest point in the city, which was the Hill. In 1615, a fire consumed the greater part of the castle. In the second half of the 17th century, Emperor Leopold I Habsburg handed the castle ruins over to the Jesuits, who arranged a small church in them, and subsequently added a school.
To this day, a Gothic tower (partially embedded in school buildings) and part of the walls with a bartizan, i.e., a spherical turret, have been preserved from the castle. The restored facility can be visited with a guide. Before the tower stands a monument to Józef Lompa, a Polish activist and publicist.
