The Opole Zoological Garden is located on Bolko Island in Opole. More than 1,000 animals live in it, representing over 220 species.
The origins of the garden date back to 1912 when a part of the area on the island was fenced off to create a private idyllic area for roe deer, peacocks, and pheasants.
In the 1930s, the city began to cover part of the garden's maintenance costs in exchange for making it open to residents.
Most of the buildings on the grounds of the modern zoo were built in the 21st century. Among them is a pavilion for giraffes and a pool for sea lions – animals that are the showcase of the Opole zoo. Other favorites of the garden are the western lowland gorillas. Visitors can also watch the feeding of seals, and the youngest can take part in feeding the animals under the supervision of an employee of the facility.
Several bars and ice cream parlors, as well as a souvenir shop, operate on the grounds of the garden.
