Byczyna is a town in the Kluczbork district and the seat of the Byczyna urban-rural municipality. The town, which is located on the Wieruszów Upland, is inhabited by approx. 3.6 thousand people. The first mention of the town comes from 1228, when Duke Henry I the Bearded was to grant town rights to the settlement. In the 13th century, the town belonged to the Duchy of Wrocław, and at the end of the century, it came under the rule of Duke Henry III of Głogów. In the years 1341-1348, it was under the rule of King Casimir the Great, who gave Byczyna to the Bohemian King Charles IV in 1356. In the battle of Byczyna on January 24, 1588, the troops of Jan Zamoyski defeated the army of the Austrian Archduke Maximilian, a pretender to the Polish throne. After the death of the last Duke of Legnica-Brzeg, George William, in 1675, Byczyna passed under the direct administration of the rulers of Austria, and from 1742 it found itself within the borders of Prussia. In 1945, the Red Army entered Byczyna, and after the end of World War II, the town found itself within the borders of the Polish state. The town has preserved its medieval urban complex and many monuments, including the Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity, the Evangelical church from the 14th century, and the almost entirely preserved town walls from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
