The complex of historic tenement houses by the market square in Brzeg consists of former bourgeois houses in the central part of the town, the oldest of which date back to the 14th century.
The oldest news about building brick houses in Brzeg comes from 1318; whereas from 1398 comes information about allowing townsmen to purchase bricks from the town brickyard at a reduced price.
The first brick bourgeois houses began to be erected along the market frontages and along the streets leading towards the town gates, in building blocks constituting the immediate vicinity of the market square. Many facades of Brzeg tenement houses were decorated with fully sculpted figures of patron saints and intercessors, protecting their inhabitants from misfortunes.
In the 19th century, this custom began to be abandoned, and secular iconography began to dominate, referring to Greek and Germanic mythology.
Among the bourgeois tenement houses in the market square, attention is drawn to the reconstructed house at number 18 with a Renaissance facade from the 17th century and the house at number 13 with a Baroque portal from the early 18th century.
Of particular note is the Renaissance tenement house from the end of the 16th century at 1 Chopina Street, the Baroque Kreyer tenement house from 1715 (5 Jabłkowa Street), and the Empire-style tenement house from 1797 (7 Jabłkowa Street).
