The "Otmuchów" water reservoir was created in the 1930s, along with the modernization of the nearby railway line for the needs of electric power production. Its task was also supposed to be flood protection of the Oder valley and supplying the waterway with the water necessary for navigation, agriculture, and industry. It is the oldest large-area retention reservoir in the region and has the longest earth dam in Poland, the length of which is 6.5 km. The reservoir also has a tourist and recreational character – around the artificial lake, you can find holiday resorts and campsites.
On the shore of the reservoir, there is a power plant building made of steel and glass. It is founded on the upstream slope, which is the only such solution in hydraulic engineering on a European scale.
