The remains of the defensive walls in Grodków are relics of medieval town fortifications, which also included two gate towers – the Lewin and Ziębice ones, and the prison tower. The ring of fortifications, which had a shape similar to an oval, was built at the end of the 13th century. The defensive walls in the lower story were built of fieldstone, while their upper stories – of brick. The fortifications were destroyed during the activities of the Thirty Years' War, but thanks to the efforts of Bishop Sebastian Rostock, their reconstruction took place at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the first half of the next century, the fortifications were partially dismantled, and the moats were liquidated and turned into a park. To modern times, fragments of the walls have survived in the southwestern and northern parts of the town, in particular along Warszawska Street.
