The remains of the defensive walls in Olesno are relics of the municipal fortifications that were built at the end of the 14th century on the initiative of the Dukes of Niemodlin.
They surrounded the town, founded on a hill, from all sides. Two gates led into the town: the Opole Gate – from the south, and the Gorzów Gate – from the north. The walls had a porch for guards with arrow slits. The walls were surrounded by a moat fed by the waters of the Młynówka and a pond – from the north.
At the end of the 18th century, the demolition of the fortifications began in order to obtain building material.
The only section of the walls preserved to modern times is a 15-meter fragment erected from finger bricks, joined with lime mortar. This section can be seen at Józefa Lompy Street and from the side of Stanisława Drzymały Street, which runs along the former town moat.
