The remains of the defensive walls in Namysłów are relics of the municipal fortification system, the construction of which began in the mid-14th century. Its composition, apart from defensive walls with a length of approx. 1,800 m, included a castle, 37 towers, and 11 bastions. In order to build them, four new brickyards were established in the town. The system surrounded the town with a ring, in some places – a double one. The northern and southern walls are 1.70 m thick, the walls from the eastern side – 2.20 m. Their original height reached 6 meters.
From the mid-19th century, the walls began to be gradually demolished, enlarging the area of the town, or they were used to build residential houses adjacent to them.
About 80% of the municipal fortifications have survived to modern times.
In the walls of the northern and eastern parts of the town, traces of escarpments, arrow slits, and porches have been preserved. In the vicinity of the castle, two arcade culverts have survived – a single and a double one, through which a branch of the Widawa river flows within the town, creating the so-called Mill Island (Wyspa Młyńska).
